One of the most important things you can do to derail binge eating is simple – just breathe.
I did a video on this topic over on the good ole YouTubes. You can check it out below:
Using the breath is something that I learned when I was overcoming my own battle with food and body. One day, one of my mentors told me:
“You just need to breathe.”
At first, I thought it too simple and dumb to really work. But the more I did it, the more I realized that being intentional with your breath and truly taking deep breaths can help you connect mind and body, head and heart.
Think about it – most of us walk around like talking heads and completely ignore our bodies. Breath is the quickest tool to help us reconnect into our body and the present moment. Try it right now…
Take a few deep breaths, in through the nose, and out through the mouth. Then feel into your body. You should notice a visceral shift.
When you give yourself the space to be present and use your breath to breathe deeply into your system, you begin to move energy. When you binge, you’re using food as a drug to suppress energy and emotions. So breathing deep into your body allows you to do the opposite.
Deep breathing is called diaphramic breathing. It’s when you breathe through the belly. When you inhale through the nose, your belly should go out, and when you exhale through the mouth, your belly should go in. Normal, shallow breathing through your chest keeps you constantly disconnected from your body, which is why it can be so easy to fall into binge autopilot.
When you find yourself on the verge of binge eating, stop, ground yourself in the present, and breathe deeply three times. When you are present, it is impossible to binge eat.
Feel into your body.
Feel into the sensations, but don’t identify with them. For example, you’re not anxious, you’re experiencing anxiety. When you observe the sensation rather than identify with it, you create space between you and it. In that space, you won’t want to numb the emotionality, which means you won’t turn to food to cope.
Breath is the simplest and most underrated tool when it comes to overcoming binge eating. So often, we overcomplicate everything with diets and books and all the things, so that we feel like we accomplished something to get over this. But it really can be simple.
For me personally, something that was key to overcoming the battle with food and my body was to:
Accept your sensations.
Your system is full of sensations all the time. When you accept what is, you can transcend it. You can’t heal or transform if you are constantly resisting what is true for you. What you resist persists. It’s when you surrender to these sensations and emotions, that you will finally be able to heal them and transform into the highest, best, and most authentic version of yourself.
